Na polystyrene sulfonate
Indications/Uses
Treatment of hyperkalaemia.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Adult Oral susp 60 mL once-qds. Powd for susp 15-60 g daily, give each dose as a susp in a small quantity of water or syrup (20-100 mL or 3-4 mL/g of resin). Rectal powd for susp 30-45 g once-bd at 6-hr interval, administer as warm emulsion in 150-120 mL of aqueous vehicle.
Administration
May be taken with or without food: Suspend powd in a small quantity of water/syr.
Special Precautions
Monitor serum K levels & all applicable electrolyte disturbances. Chronic hypocalcemia of renal failure. Intolerance of slight increase in Na loads ie severe CHF or HTN & marked edema. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Gastric irritation, anorexia, nausea, vomiting, constipation, hypokalemia, hypocalcaemia & significant Na retention. Occasionally, diarrhea. Large doses in elderly may cause fecal impaction. Intestinal obstruction when used concomitantly w/ Al(OH)3.
Drug Interactions
Non-absorbable cation-donating antacids & laxatives eg, Mg hydroxide & Al carbonate. Diuretics, K-sparing or K supplements.
